How To Not Quit Too Soon


Huayna Picchu is a mountain in Peru that rises over Machu Picchu. Its peak is about 2,720 meters (8920 ft) above sea level and is said to have been the residence for the high priest and the local virgins of the Inca people.

What does this have to do with quitting?

This mountain is a tough one to climb. It is steep and some portions are slippery.

But the beauty you see from his high points is awesome. It is totally worth the effort.

When I made this climb, my legs hurt, my breathing was labored and I was sweating profusely. It was tough and many times I thought of quitting, but I’m so glad I didn’t. What I saw from his peak was incredible and something I’ll never forget.

Being in sales is often what it feels like to climb Huayna Picchu. The path can be challenging, it can hurt and be uncomfortable, and the urge to quit can be overwhelming. But for those that persevere, the rewards are great.

Some research revealed how prevalent quitting is. What I found was crazy scary statistics.

– 80% endure frustration and blame their lack of success on circumstances

– 10% of people accept defeat

– only 10% actually succeed at what they set out to accomplish

Guess who these last ten percent are? They are the sales professionals making the big bucks.

If you can make lots of money by staying the course, why would you quit so soon? My theory is because…

 It is easy!

There is nothing hard or complex about it. You can just do it.

So what can you do to change this? How do you beat that overwhelming urge to quit, throw in the towel, to say adios?

I am no different than you. I feel that urge to quit, especially when I’ve had the fifteenth no or have been rejected after my third attempt to see a potential client.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. Asking yourself (which I do often) five simple questions can turn the “I quit” urge around and keep you climbing the mountain to success.

They really work! Give them a try whenever the urge to quit hits you.

1) Am I taking responsibility?

This question forces you to take a hard look at how you are behaving and thinking. Are you resisting the temptation to whine and complain? Are you blaming your less than stellar sales on the economy, the prices, your manager, or the product?

Say to yourself, “Alright, things aren’t going too well, so what am I going to do about it?” This question puts the responsibility back on YOU (and no one else) to take responsibility for your success.

2) Am I hanging out with winners?

It’s funny how people seem to be more comfortable hanging out with the losers than the winners. If you do this, it might be because you fell sorry for them or it makes you feel better when you compare yourself to them.

Hanging out with losers can have you saying things like, “Boy, I really have my life together compared to them.” The problem is people that talk negative and justify their mediocre results by pointing fingers at others only drag you down.

They will infect you and persuade you to quit working hard or smart. This is why you must seek out the winners, the ones that don’t quit. Copy what they do and let them inspire you with their “can do” attitude.

3) Do I have a system to follow?

A system is a step-by-step way doing something. It might be a good opening statement, a killer voice mail template, a technique to get past a get keeper, or a way to handle smokescreen objections. Having such a system reduces your frustration and discouragement. This translates to a less tendency to quit.

4) Do I have a coach?

I can’t stress how important it is that you have a coach. This person acts as a cheerleader, which we all need in sales, and above all a conscience.

A good coach will applaud you when you succeed, give you the needed pep talks, and scold you when you get off track.

5) Do I have skin in the game?

Here’s a way to hedge the bet in favor of you not quitting too soon: get some skin in the game. Invest YOUR money and YOUR time in self-development. Buy a sales book, invest in a sales system or sign up for coaching. Once you reach into your pocket and spend your hard earned money, you’ll find quitting is much less appealing.
